UK poised for self-employment boom as half of adults plan to start a business
Red Helix ’ s £ 1 million investment in UK SOC drives 150 % headcount growth
New research from Intuit QuickBooks uncovers a potential surge in entrepreneurial activity across the UK , marking 2025 as a pivotal year for selfemployment growth . The report , which surveys 3,000 adults in the UK , highlights a renewed entrepreneurial spirit , with over half ( 52 %) of respondents considering launching a business in the next year .
With self-employment numbers in decline since 2020 ( down from 5 million in 2020 to 4.3 million in 2024 ), this report signals a potential turning point suggesting UK consumers are ready to redefine entrepreneurship – embracing side hustles , leveraging digital
tools and seeking financial independence to navigate today ’ s economic challenges .
Rob Burlison , Director of International Corporate Affairs at Intuit QuickBooks , said : “ The findings highlight an exciting shift in the UK entrepreneurial landscape , with a renewed focus on self-employment and side hustles . Starting a business doesn ’ t have to be complicated or costly , people just need the confidence .”
A ten-fold increase in customers in the space of a year has led Red Helix , a market leader in cybersecurity and network performance , to invest £ 1 million in expanding the capacity of its UK-based 24 / 7 security operations centre ( SOC ), increasing headcount by 150 %. The company expects its SOC team to grow further in 2025 , as demand for its specialised cyberservices continues to soar .
Despite the global cyberskills shortage , Red Helix has been successful in recruiting and retaining SOC analysts who understand real-world security in small and medium companies . The investment has been dedicated to creating innovative workspaces to support this talent , building a first-class team and deploying an integrated suite of tools to
ensure Red Helix can continue delivering industry-leading cybersecurity services tailored to the unique needs of SMEs .
Red Helix ’ s round-the-clock SOC coverage has brought enterprise-level security to the SMBs that often lack the in-house skills to integrate and manage the security platforms they need .
