Editor ’ s note

S COMPANIES GROW , it sometimes becomes

A apparent that the original IT system which was used to start up does not align with the demands of a bigger business . Miller UK , which supplies trusted products to a wide range of leading earthmoving manufacturers across the globe , found this was the case with its enterprise resource planning ( ERP ) system . The outdated solution didn ’ t provide the required visibility on stock in transit , supply chain or production efficiency and it was also missing a key configurator for customers to easily locate the correct product .

Iain Lytollis , IT Manager , Miller UK , who features on the front cover , explained how the company chose Epicor Kinetic as its new ERP solution . It offered the integrated accounting , production , purchasing and multi-currency / multi-site / multiwarehouse features that the business was looking for . Epicor Kinetic helped Miller to streamline its IT infrastructure and reduce the number of legacy systems in its environment . Turn to page 44 to find out more .
And keeping with the ERP theme , my Editor ’ s Question this month focuses on exactly that and asks why an ERP is an essential tool for an SME . Four experts explain why they think an ERP is crucial for an SME to succeed – turn to page 20 .
Running out of funding and personal money is one of the main reasons why start-ups fail , which is why tech start-ups often seek external investment . However , with the current economic challenges , obtaining external investment has become more difficult , leading start-ups to adapt their investment strategies . On page 25 Zickie Lim , Partner and Head of Venture Capital Investments at Mills & Reeve , offers practical advice to help tech start-ups and scale-ups navigate this new landscape .
Government organisations were ahead of the curve with regards to hybrid working when the pandemic hit . Kieron Murphy , Director of Workplace Hubs at Matrix Booking , explains on page 37 how the private sector could learn a lot from the public sector by looking at its cross-organisational sharing of workspaces .
We also have a round-up of all the latest SME news from across our regions , while our intelligent brands section looks at what ’ s new in sales and marketing , finance , HR and customer experience .
